San Fransisco, 31 December 2009 - Twitter has launched a new feature called ‘Geotagging’ on the 19th of November. This feature will help identify Twitter users from a particular geographical region.

Earlier this could be done based on the information provided by the users in their profile and was not so dependable.

Biz Stone, a co-founder of Twitter reveals that a new API is being designed by Twitter using which developers of third party applications will be able to get the latitude and longitude of the users who have enabled this service.

Geotagging is set to off by default and can be turned ‘on’ from the account tab in ‘settings’ section. Users can view tweets by people they normally follow or tweets by people from a particular location.

The Geotagging feature allows users to embed their location in the usual 140-character tweets. A map ‘pin’ is displayed on the bottom of the tweet, clicking on which a Google map displaying the exact location shows up.

Recently, Twitter has introduced useful features like single-click retweet and Twitter lists that have enhanced the overall experience of Twitter users.

Though the new Geotagging feature might be useful for third-party developers and businesses looking for localized promotion, some users might not find it comfortable to reveal their location.
